About Pakistan Federation Baseball

History of baseball in Paksitan

Baseball in Pakistan is a developing sport with a unique journey from obscurity to international recognition. Though cricket has long been the nation’s dominant sport, baseball slowly carved its own path through the passion of a few dedicated individuals and the establishment of a formal federation. Its rise reflects the resilience and spirit of athletes who embraced a sport not native to the region and worked tirelessly to grow it nationwide.

Early Beginnings and Grassroots Development

Baseball activities trace back as far as the 1950s, when informal baseball and softball games were played among sports enthusiasts in regions like Punjab. One of the earliest organized efforts was by Khawaja Muhammad Aslam, head of the Pakistan Railways Sports Department, who initiated inter-division baseball tournaments. These early competitions helped sustain interest among players and laid the foundation for more formal structures to come.

The Formation of the Pakistan Federation Baseball (PFB)

The turning point for baseball in Pakistan came with the formal establishment of the Pakistan Federation Baseball (PFB). Although there were multiple baseball groups in the country during the late 1980s, none had clear organisational backing or national recognition. Eventually, Syed Khawar Shah’s leadership brought unity to the sport. In 1992, Shah united rival factions and officially founded one unified federation, setting headquarters in Gujranwala. This marked the birth of structured baseball governance in Pakistan.

Visionary Leadership : Syed Khawar Shah

Syed Khawar Shah is widely known as the founder of baseball in Pakistan. His passion began as a sports officer in Gujranwala, where he saw the potential of baseball to grow among youth. Shah worked relentlessly to organise tournaments, establish rules, inspire players, and secure official affiliations with organisations like the International Baseball Federation, Baseball Federation of Asia, Pakistan Olympic Association, and Pakistan Sports Board.

Under his stewardship, national championships were launched for both men and women, and Pakistan began competing internationally. Shah’s contributions left an indelible legacy for baseball in Pakistan prior to his passing in 2018.

National Championships and Domestic Growth

The first National Baseball Championship was organised soon after the federation was unified in 1992, bringing teams from across the country to compete for the first time in an official tournament. This helped foster the sport’s credibility and encouraged local associations to form regional teams.

Over the years, Pakistan’s domestic baseball scene has expanded with more annual competitive events and youth programs aimed at nurturing emerging talent. Baseball academies have also been established, including Khawar Shah Baseball Academy in Okara, named in honor of the PBF’s founder to train young players and expand the sport’s footprint.

International Recognition and Competitions

Once organised domestically, Pakistan began participating in international baseball competitions. A major milestone came in 2010, when Pakistan won the Asian Baseball Championship (C-level), defeating Hong Kong in the final. They also captured multiple Asian Baseball Cup titles, earning respect across the region.

In 2015, Pakistan’s men’s team participated in the Asian Baseball Championship in Taiwan as the West Asian champions, and in 2016 they competed in the World Baseball Classic (WBC) Qualifiers in New York — a historic moment marking Pakistan’s first entry into the global baseball stage.
